Melodie Dakin is days away from leaving her Welland home for a trip to Mexico.

The Niagara area administrative community leader for Girl Guides of Canada will be joining her daughter Sara at Nuestra Cabaña, an international girl guide centre in Cuernavaca, about 87 kilometres south of Mexico City.

It’s one of five “world centres” established by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts that also include London, England; Adelboden, Switzerland; Pune, India; and Accra, Ghana.

“There are girl guide groups everywhere in so many countries around the world, but those are our five main world centres,” Dakin said.

She said girl guide groups from all over the world typically travel to those locations, often selling their famous cookies to help cover costs.
