BELMONT, Wis. (WMTV) - A small town about an hour southwest of Madison served as Wisconsin’s first capitol. It was where the first lawmakers met to shape the future of America’s Dairyland.
Decades of history are present in the village of about 1,000 people.
“We’re in what feels like the middle of a cornfield right now,” ‘First Capitol’ Site Manager with the Wisconsin Historical Society Bethany Brander said.
The two white buildings on site were instrumental in telling Wisconsin’s early territorial history, according to Brander.
It was back in 1836 when the two buildings, now known as the ‘First Capitol Historic Site’ in Belmont served as Wisconsin’s first capitol.
