LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services issued a health alert for a southwest Lancaster County lake.
In a press release on Thursday, officials said harmful algal blooms — also known as toxic blue-green algae — were detected in Bluestem Lake.
Samples taken earlier this week indicated that the toxin level given off by the algae is higher than normal, according to officials.
The state said signs have been posted around the lake, telling the public to use caution and to stay off swimming beaches.
According to officials, recreational boating and fishing are still allowed, but you are urged to use caution and avoid exposure to the water.
People can also still use public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.
