Attorney Angela Lockett was appointed to the Gary School Board by the Gary Common Council on July 15.

Lockett was selected out of 11 applicants who interviewed for the position in April.

She succeeds Vanessa Allen-McCloud, president and CEO of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, who has sought reappointment to the school board.

Lockett previously served as Gary's corporation counsel, heading the city's law department. She was fired in September 2023 by then-Mayor Jerome Prince.

Gary's mayor and common council each have a pick on the five-member appointed school board. The remaining three members are appointed by the Indiana secretary of education.
