CROWN POINT — The Lake County Council is poised to adopt an ordinance Tuesday to regulate for the first time the placement and operation of data centers located in unincorporated areas of the county.

The proposed policy — a revision to Lake County's Unified Development Ordinance — was unanimously recommended to the council by the Lake County Plan Commission following numerous data center controversies elsewhere in Northwest Indiana, and across the Hoosier State.

"It's trying to be proactive in the process and make sure that when that attention comes on Lake County, which I suspect it will, we're ready for it," said Councilman Randy Niemeyer, R-Cedar Lake, who also serves on the Plan Commission.
