AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its mid-season outlook on the Atlantic hurricane season Thursday morning.
The previous outlook released in May called for an above normal season and the latest outlook doesn’t show much change.
The latest outlook released is expecting 13-18 named storms, 5-9 of those becoming hurricanes (winds 74 mph or greater), and 2-5 major hurricanes (winds 111 mph or greater). The release further explained that, “the likelihood of above-normal activity is 50%, a 35% chance of a near-normal season, and a 15% chance of a below-normal season”.
Based on historical averages, a normal Atlantic Hurricane Season has 14 named storms, 7 of those becoming hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
