SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The FBI has a new way for residents to see crime rates in their community. But local police departments are warning the public about the information.

Springfield police say on the FBI website, you'll see that crime data is broken down into five major categories.

Up until 2021, annual crime reports were gathered by the FBI from local police departments through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Springfield Police say that the system is best used when looking at crime data in the same city for the last 10 years.

All the most accurate local data is shown on the state's website. That information is gathered by police in the National Incident-Based Reporting System
