Calgary is under a severe thunderstorm warning Thursday afternoon with Environment Canada (ECCC) warning of storms that could bring strong wind and hail.

The weather agency issued the warning around 3:45 p.m. as meteorologists track a severe storm that developed over the foothills and currently making its way over the city.

“This thunderstorm is located just south of downtown Calgary and is nearly stationary,” reads the warning, adding that the storm could produce pea to dime-sized hail and bring heavy rainfall.

ECCC says local travel delays are likely and warns that heavy rain may cause localized flooding in certain areas.

People should avoid low-lying areas and motorists are being asked to not drive through flooded roadways
