PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Being a police officer comes with many challenges, but it’s easy to ignore the impact that mental health has on law enforcement, especially following an officer-involved shooting.

Research from an online group known as the Police Executive Research Forum shows that incidents like officer-involved shootings can lead to higher rates of retirement and resignation from the force, even in Central Illinois.

Director of Central Illinois Police Training Brain Fengel said officer-involved shootings are high stress events not only for the officer, but their family, other officers, and the department as a whole.

He said departments receive special training on providing emotional support to these officers.
