URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) -- A researcher at the University of Illinois got some good news and some bad news within the last week.

On the good side, Dr. Kaiyu Guan of the College of ACES was just named the recipient of the top national award for innovation in agriculture using satellite technology. Data from satellites helps farmers make decisions, and it helps policymakers formulate policy.

"I'm very proud and very honored, but for another aspect, it's really not a personal honor," Guan said. "It goes to the bigger team's effort and then we are very grateful."

But on the bad side is the fact that two satellites that monitor climate change, used by many of Guan's colleagues, were marked for destruction by President Donald Trump. Guan is distraught by the news.
