BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The city of Bakersfield said it is planning to seek almost $5 million in additional state funding to continue to reduce the city’s gun violence statistics.

According to city officials, Bakersfield has seen a sharp decline in gun violence in the past three years. Gun-related homicides went from 60 in 2021 to 26 in 2024, and non-fatal shootings went from 109 to 44 during that same period.

Overall, the city of Bakersfield marked a 74% overall reduction in gun violence-related homicides and non-fatal shootings since 2021, city officials said.

Bakersfield’s gun reduction strategy involved grant funding from the California Violence Intervention & Prevention program, as well as funds from the city’s Public Safety & Vital Services Measure, according to the city.
