GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — New sweeping U.S. tariffs now in effect for countries and goods across the globe. Rates under President Donald Trump's executive order signed last week range anywhere from 10% to 41%, with the exception of certain goods from the European Union.
It comes roughly a week after Canada, a major Michigan trading partner, was also struck with a 35% rate for many goods crossing the border.
President Donald Trump and members of his administration have asserted their prediction that higher tariffs will encourage more in-country manufacturing and, as a result, more U.S. jobs.
Others have argued that what they see as a lack of direction or detail on how the tariffs will work has created what one member of Michigan's congressional delegation called "a policy
