Immigrants in the U.S. trying to obtain legal residency now face a greater risk of deportation under a new policy change by the Department of Homeland Security that went into effect on August 1.

The shift impacts those in the process of applying for green cards, even when they are married to U.S. citizens.

Christina Toledo filed a petition to legalize her Guatemalan husband, Nexan Aroldo Asencio, after she said he successfully cleared the initial steps toward a green card by having an I-130 approved.

He was moving forward with the process when he was detained by ICE agents outside their Milford home in May.
