GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The 911 call operators in Pitt County are always ready for the call that someone’s car has gotten stuck in flood water.

That’s exactly what happened Wednesday in Spring Hope when a van was swept off of a flooded roadway , which claimed the lives of two people. A Spring Hope Police officer tried to help them when he was also swept away, but was rescued, according to officials.

Pitt County Emergency Management says you can avoid it happening to you by never driving through flooded roadways, even if it doesn’t look bad to you.

“It only takes a couple of inches of moving water. It has enough power to push larger vehicles off the road,” said Emergency Management Deputy Director James McArthur.
