ALEXANDRIA — Peter Ancona is on to the semifinals of the Men’s Masters division following a win in extra holes over Mark Frie. This sets him up with a Friday semifinal match against the No. 4 seed Greg Mattson.
In the other semifinal, the No. 2 seed Jon Empanger remains in the hunt for a fourth straight Men’s Masters title, but on Friday, he’ll have to defeat the 2021 Men’s Masters champion Tom Ryan.
Ancona def. Frie, 19 holes
Ancona, the No. 8 seed, birdied hole No. 1 to take a 1-up lead over the No. 16 seed Frie. Ancona then won hole No. 3 with a par, but Frie won the next hole with a par as well.
A birdie on hole No. 6 gave Ancona a 2-up lead, but Frie birdied hole No. 7 to get back within a hole.
