BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The United States is about 2,800 miles across. It has 71 primary Interstate Highways, allowing people to cross state lines to meet up with family, transport supplies, and many other things.

But we often don't think about how much time and effort it took to build this network of highways, how long it took to weave the 71 interstates in an intricate pattern, making sure it hit all the big cities, allowing drivers to get from Los Angeles to New York, or Dallas to Bismarck.

One such highway is I-94, one North Dakotans are all too familiar with, a highway that hits Dickinson, Bismarck, Jamestown, and Fargo, and many other smaller towns along the way.

Today marks 55 years since the highway was fully completed in 1970.
