BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Assistant Public Defender Jeanna Wheat says she never imagined a federally protected right to pump breastmilk would turn into a fight with a judge inside the 19th Judicial District Courthouse.

Wheat says that before she even came back to work after the birth of her second child, she emailed District Judge Colette Greggs to inform her of her pumping schedule. Wheat requested to take breaks in order to provide for her newborn and stay comfortable.

“Someone should be able to go to work, do their job well, and feed their child,” said Wheat. “I pump on the way to work so I can stretch out my very first break for as long as possible. I try to wait to take my first break until I absolutely have to.”
