LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Mosquitoes are just another fact of life for southwest Louisiana, especially the closer you get to the coast.

“Where you get a lot of that tidal coastal influence, those are like the worst mosquitoes in terms of abundance in numbers,” Kristen Healy, an entomologist with LSU AGCenter, said.

Healy said the biting buzzers are made up of a large and picky population.

“In Louisiana, we have over 60 different species,” Healy said. “Some of those species will solely feed on birds. Some will just feed on reptiles. Some will just feed on large mammals. Some feed on small mammals. Some feed on everything. Some are very specific.”
