A Sunrise Beach woman was sentenced to 46 months in prison and three years of supervised release for repeatedly lying and concealing her chimpanzees, according to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Tonia Haddix pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice on March 31 after she repeatedly made false statements that her chimpanzee Tonka died , according to a news release by the Eastern District of Missouri. She was sentenced Thursday.
The 55-year-old's statements were made in an effort to comply with court orders filed in 2016 by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for not taking proper care of her pet in her Camden County home.
