Tonia Haddix, the star of HBO’s 2024 docuseries “Chimp Crazy,” was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison on Thursday in a case related to her lies about the death of her celebrity pet chimpanzee, Tonka.
Haddix, 55, was convicted of two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction during an investigation into Tonka’s death, whom Haddix was instead hiding in her basement. She pleaded guilty to those charges in March and was arrested in July for having an unregistered chimpanzee at her home in Sunrise Beach, Missouri, according to the FOX 2 in St. Louis .
As detailed in “Chimp Crazy,” Haddix owned a chimpanzee compound in Festus, Missouri, where she rented out the animals for events including birthday parties and television and film appearances. Tonka had appeared in films including
