CHESTERTON, Ind. — A northern Indiana man was sentenced Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to federal charges of felony mail fraud.

Alan Jones, 55, of Valparaiso, was sentenced Aug. 6 to 12 months of probation and was ordered to pay back $123,523 in restitution to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

According to court documents, Jones worked for an environmental consulting company that is based in Chesterton. Jones and the company were hired by gas station owners to manage and perform remediation work related to underground storage tank leaks.

The State of Indiana created a trust fund, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, to help reimburse those remediation costs.
