Concerns have been mounting in Harlem over a deadly Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.
“One of the things that is very important for us to do is examine and find out why this keeps popping up in Black and Brown communities,” Harlem State Sen. Cordell Cleare said. “This is a plague that seems only to affect us in our community. We need to find out what those gaps are. What is it that’s being neglected?”
The cluster in Central Harlem was discovered on July 25. During a press conference on Thursday, elected leaders urged New Yorkers to stay vigilant.
“This is not the time to say, ‘Let me go to the grocery store, get some ginger ale and let me lay up somewhere.’ This is the time to actually go and seek medical care. This is how serious this is,” Harlem Councilmember Yusef Salaam said.
