OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - The Heartland Humane Society is a non-profit, no kill shelter, that strives to gives animals another chance to find a home.

But the costs of caring for the animals have pushed the group into debt this year.

Assistant Manager, Courtney Monohon said that the cost of care for animals taking a toll.

“The surgeries are drowning us like crazy. And that’s on top of all the spay and neuters and all the medical stuff that’s going on”.

Some vet centers partnered with the shelter for discounted services, but Monohon said the Shelter can spend up to 6-thousand dollars in medical care for just one animal. Especially for those with severe issues.
