BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Companion Animal Alliance animal shelter is putting out a call for the community to help them with a serious shelter overcrowding issue.
Jen Hollas with the shelter said the CAA is currently housing over 500 cats and dogs, and they're facing overcrowding because the summer is the height of puppy and kitten season.
"We are a non-profit animal shelter, and we are open intake," said Hollas. "We actually have a contract with the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control, so every single animal that animal control picks up comes to our building - every single stray, every single owner surrender from East Baton Rouge Parish also comes to us. It's incredibly important to have a safe haven for animals in our community." The shelter is now facing a heartbreak
