FARGO — Shakopee Post 2 wasted no time getting the bats going Thursday.
The Minnesota American Legion state champions pounced on Fargo Post 400 early, using a nine-run first inning en route to a 15-6 win over the Stars in a Central Plains Regional second-round winner's bracket contest at Starion Bank Field.
Nick Johnson's grand slam in the top of the first set the tone, belting the ball 365 feet over the right-field fence to give Shakopee an early lead it never relinquished.
Johnson, a Minnesota State Mankato commit, finished 2-for-4 with the grand slam, a triple, six RBIs and two runs scored.
The four-run shot came on the first pitch of the at-bat for Johnson.
"I went up there and I always like hitting first pitch," Johnson said. "I saw a first-pitch fastball and just hit it."
