WAYNE, Neb. (KTIV) - A northeast Nebraska man is now a step closer to trial in his own murder case after he was ruled competent to stand trial.

33-year-old Carl Ruskamp was in Wayne County District County Court on Wednesday.

The court heard from staff at the Lincoln Regional Center that Ruskamp was now competent to stand trial.

He had previously been ruled incompetent at a hearing in September of 2024.

Prosecutors accuse him of shooting his father, Gerald Ruskamp, in the head back in September of 2022 .

He’s charged with first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a deadly weapon by a felon.

Now that he’s been ruled competent to stand trial, the judge set a pre-trial conference for Ruskamp for September 3, 2025, with a trial date of November
