BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. —

Jacob Doyle was sentenced Thursday morning to 25 years in prison for the reckless murder of Kenny and Dot Sims, who were killed in a 2017 drunk driving crash in Blount County, bringing a long-awaited conclusion to the case after years of setbacks.

The couple was heading home from church when Doyle, driving under the influence, crashed into their car, killing them instantly.

Doyle received a sentence of 25 years for each death, but will only serve up to 25 years in total, a decision that the Sims' daughter, Kim Cooper, disagrees with.

"That's wrong. It was two people he killed, not one," Cooper said.

Despite her disagreement with the sentencing, Cooper expressed relief at finally having some sense of closure regarding her parents' deaths.
