ELTON, La. (KLFY) -- The police force in Elton has been disbanded due to budget issues, leaving the town without local law enforcement.

Town leaders, including Mayor Pro Temp Kay Hebert, explained that the police chief had to lay off his team after exceeding a budget of over $317,000. Despite efforts to curtail expenses and implement measures like restricting overtime, the department's budget was exhausted.

"This has been going on. We have tried to put measures in place for over a year now to curtail expenses in that department, curtail payroll in that department. We ask that there be no overtime. That was not done," said Kay Hebert, Mayor Pro Temp of Elton.
