DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — West Davidson High School senior Mason Miller knows the highs and lows of football all too well. His junior season began with a bang—catching 90-yard touchdown passes, breaking school records, and electrifying the crowd every Friday night.

“It felt so good,” Miller said. “It’s fulfilling—especially knowing your name will be part of the community forever. It’s just so great.”

But just two weeks into the season, that momentum came to a crashing halt.

In the second quarter of a game, Miller ran a routine fade route and hauled in a normal over-the-shoulder catch. But the defender got tangled up with him mid-air, and Miller landed awkwardly on his shoulder.

“As soon as I landed, I knew something was wrong,” he recalled. “It hurt so bad—I couldn’t even breathe.”
