NORFOLK, Va. — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been more measles cases reported in 2025 than in any year in the past three decades.

1992 was the last year that there were more cases reported than in 2025. This year alone, 171 people have been hospitalized due to measles, and three people have died, according to the CDC.

Yet, CDC data indicate that more than 280,000 preschool and kindergarten-age kids may be headed to the classroom this fall without full vaccine coverage against the disease. Still, there are ways to stay protected this school year.
