SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) - Construction has taken over West Main Street in Salem.

“There’s a lot of excitement going on; this is kind of our golden mile,” Tommy Miller, director of economic development in Salem, said, “from Wildwood down towards 4th Street closer to downtown. We are excited about all the national chains that looked at this corridor.”

A project that’s really turning heads is a Wawa convenience store, one of the first in Southwest Virginia. It’s under construction next to the Waffle House, just off I-81. And the anticipation is building.

“Folks from all over the Roanoke region and Southwest Virginia have really been excited about the name, the brand coming here.”
