SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) - Sparks parents were arrested on Thursday, Aug. 7, after a Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy found their 3-month old son’s cause of death was infant malnutrition, starvation, and dehydration, according to a Sparks Police news release.

Giovonnye Hart, 22, and Hailey Moniz, 23, are in the Washoe County Jail charged with first-degree murder in perpetration or attempted perpetration of abuse of a child under 14 years of age and child neglect.

On April 5, Hart and Moniz took their baby to the St. Mary’s Medical Center’s emergency room. The baby was unresponsive with a faint heartbeat, police said.

Medical staff attempted life-saving measures, but the baby died.
