In the August 1 Falmouth Enterprise, there was an article outlining the calamity to Cape Cod if either the Bourne or Sagamore bridges were to fail or were otherwise forced to close, and then, two pages later, there was an article outlining how best to remove the rail lines from our side of the railroad bridge to make way for a bike path.

The closure of one or the other vehicular bridges is not a “theoretical” concern as characterized in the first article. Only a year and a half ago, the Washington Bridge in Providence was suddenly shut down because of a just-discovered, critical structural danger. Months of massive traffic delays resulted—but at least there were secondary road routes to mitigate that disaster. Cape Cod would have no such alternative routes…except for the railroad bridge.
