Middletown Center deserves more scrutiny

The plans to develop the Middletown property on West Main Road, known as Middletown Center, have faced headwinds from town citizens since the initial plans were rolled out in the summer of 2022. Objections from Middletown citizens have included: lack of affordable housing in the plan; inclusion of a large hotel; lack of community space for Middletown citizens; and the loss of Pottsy Field, which honors a fallen Middletown veteran; to name just a few. One item which has received very little scrutiny involves the developers behind this plan; in particular James Karam, CEO of First Bristol Corp and board member of Steward Healthcare, which was formerly the nation’s largest private, for-profit hospital chain.
