GOSHEN – A 54-year-old Newburgh man faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced in October in connection with a Newburgh city robbery in October 2024.
Robert Smith was convicted after a jury trial in Orange County to court in Goshen.
It was alleged that while riding a bicycle, Smith approached a man on a street in Newburgh and demanded money. The victim refused to pay and kept walking.
Smith got off the bike, punched the victim several times, causing the man to fall back and strike his head on the pavement.
Smith then went through the man’s pockets, took property and fled.
Prior to trial, the victim died from unrelated causes.
“The use of unprovoked violence is unacceptable and this offender was rightfully held accountable for his crimes,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.
