Three American-owned companies are getting a massive boost with Canadian dollars to expand a data centre in Cambridge.

The expansion will see Ascent TOR1, the former six-megawatt facility in the old BlackBerry building on Vondrau Drive in Cambridge, boosted up to 60 megawatts.

The Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has announced it will be putting up half of the $450-million loan to American data centre operator Ascent, Related Digital and TowerBrook Capital Partners, an equity firm headquartered in the United Kingdom and New York City.

Alongside Deutsche Bank Private Credit & Infrastructure, which funded the remaining 50 per cent of the loan, CPPIB will help grow the data centre, making it one of the largest in Ontario with enough power to run over 50,000 homes.
