After a failed public art competition, a 70-foot-wide mosaic tile piece highlighting women and water has been chosen as the new artwork for the Kitchener Indoor Recreation Complex at RBJ Schlegel Park.
Kitchener’s finance and corporate services committee will be asked to give its approval to the installation Monday, commissioned to Anishinaabe artist Jackie Traverse.
Titled “Gidinawendimin,” which translates to “We Are All Related,” the art piece “honours the leadership of women, their intergenerational strength and the ways in which their voices, like water, flow outward in protection of land, life and spirit,” stated a report to the committee.
The commission cost is $320,000, with the funds taken from the consolidated public art account.
