DES MOINES, Iowa ( KCCI ) - For the second year in a row, a Monticello pork producer is taking home the trophy for the Iowa State Fair’s Big Boar contest.

Duke, a crossbred boar owned by pork producer Bryan Britt, weighed in at 1,268 pounds on Thursday.

Duke isn’t named after any European aristocrat, but he is named after Iowa royalty — Winterset native John Wayne.

“He’s always had kind of an attitude,” Britt said of the massive boar. “He’s got a swagger to him when he’s in the pen with the other boars. They know he’s the boss, he’s the guy.”

The 4-year-old boar grew up alongside last year’s big winner, the 1,420-pound Finnegan . Finnegan not only won last year’s competition but also set a new state fair record, 85 pounds heavier than the previous record set in 2012.
