BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) -

Some jump off diving boards in the summer. Others traverse old oil platforms off the shore of lake Champlain.

We were asked why they’re still there.

Dave wrote to us saying “I was just curious why these oil pumps are still in the water. Do they have a potential leakage? Are they still being used?”

The platforms off of Oakledge Park have been there for roughly a century.

They were once used to transport petroleum to the shore, but today, they’ve taken on new meaning.

Swimmers, kayakers, and even jet skiers frequent the platforms. They’re unlikely attractions, with old rusty pipes and a weathered platform.

But people keep coming back.

The waterfront diving center uses them as navigation tools on underwater explorations
