Before he'd even reached high school, Jacarin Scott had already rescued five dogs from the streets of the Lower 9th Ward, the New Orleans neighborhood where he lived with his mother and siblings. He hoped to one day open a shelter, where he'd nurture and dote on abandoned dogs, the animal he loved most.

He did everything he could to care for his pets — mowing lawns for cash to buy them food and setting aside his usual introversion to ask neighbors for help. In the end, he may have given his life for them.

"I think that's why he was out that night," said his mother, Adrienne Jones. "Trying to get food for his dogs."
