HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1971, Richard Petty won a race at the Ona Speedway in Cabell County, WV.

We all know him as the “King of Nascar,” but on that day, he led 279 laps out of the 500 at the Ona track.

It was called the International Raceway Park then.

He was so exhausted at the end of the race that they had to give him oxygen in the sweltering heat.
