Lufthansa is a key player on the transatlantic corridor between Europe and North America, with the German flag carrier's widebody twinjets and quadjets making countless crossings every day. Earlier in its history, the makeup of its transatlantic operations was rather different, in that it relied on piston-engined planes.

Among the most iconic of these was the Lockheed L-1649A 'Starliner,' which was developed from the US manufacturer's L-1049 'Super Constellation' and built in the mid to late 1950s. Almost seven decades later, Lufthansa has beautifully restored one of these legendary aircraft, with a view to displaying it for the airline's 100th anniversary, where it will take its place alongside another historical plane.
