The Porter County Commissioners voted on Aug. 5 to approve an ordinance that will allow and regulate on-site solar energy collection in the county's unincorporated areas.
Personal solar energy systems will be allowed on residential and commercial properties in all zoning districts but will face some restrictions regarding where on a property they can be stalled.
Under the terms of the new ordinance, any solar energy system that is non-operational for a year must be removed by the property owner.
Both on-site solar arrays and commercial solar farms were allowed under a 2020 zoning ordinance, but those rules were repealed in 2023.
All three commissioners told The Times in July that they have no plans to bring back rules for large-scale solar developments.
