VALPARAISO, Ind. — A Porter County man has been ordered to pay more than $120,000 in restitution for his role in a scheme to defraud the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Alan Jones, a 55-year-old Valparaiso resident, was sentenced to 12 months of probation and ordered to pay $123,523 in restitution to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Acting United States Attorney Scott Proctor announced Thursday.

According to prosecutors, the scheme unfolded while Jones was working at an environmental consulting company in Chesterton, Indiana.

Jones and the company had been hired by gas station owners to manage and perform remediation work related to underground storage tank leaks and in order to help reimburse the remediation costs, the State of Indiana created a state
