Carnegie Mellon University has laid off 18 employees in its School of Computer Science as it undergoes a staffing reorganization.

Several other positions have been “realigned” as the school works to streamline operations and reduce expenses, spokeswoman Cassia Crogan confirmed in an email Thursday.

“This reorganization by the School of Computer Science followed a careful process of examining school priorities and needs,” Ms. Crogan said. “Each unit at the university is responsible for assessing its own business needs and staffing.

Rumors had circulated on social media this week that hundreds of workers were laid off. Ms. Crogan confirmed that the true number was 18.
