A Massachusetts county sheriff is accused of extorting an executive at a cannabis company so he could own stock in the business, then demanding his money back when his investment didn't pay off, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins, 67, who has led the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department since he was appointed in 2013, was indicted on two counts of extortion under color of official right.

The cannabis company, which was not named by prosecutors, applied for a license to open a retail dispensary in Boston in 2019, according to prosecutors. The application required something called a positive impact plan, or PIP, which was satisfied by a partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Dep
