Effective Oct. 4, the Los Angeles-based University of Southern California and its health system, Keck Medicine of USC, will lay off 89 employees, according to WARN notices filed Aug. 4. Keck Medicine of USC will lay off 78 workers, the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center will lay off 10 and the system’s healthcare center will lay off one employee, according to the notices. 

“Despite our best efforts, we were unable to avoid layoffs,” according to a letter sent to staff Aug. 5. “This tough decision is one of several we are making to stabilize the finances of Keck Medicine and Keck School, and to ensure economic stability.” A spokesperson for Keck Medicine of USC did not respond to Becker’s requests for details regarding which roles were affected.  “We want to express gratitude for the s
