Workers at the Coast Victoria Hotel started a one-day strike on Friday, the first hotel strike seen in Victoria in more than 25 years.
The approximately 90 unionized hospitality workers at the hotel, including room attendants, front desk agents, kitchen staff and servers, walked off the job at 5 a.m. Friday calling for better staffing, “fair workloads” and living wages.
“Workers are calling for living wages to keep up with the rising cost of living in the city, as the living wage in Victoria has climbed to nearly $27 an hour,” said the union in a release Friday.
Stephen Roughley, general manager of the Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA, told CHEK News the hotel is “disappointed by the outcome” but respects the workers’ legal right to strike.
“We definitely want to get to the table,”
