Tenants had only moments to evacuate after flames shot out of a fourth floor apartment at 1115 Queens Street just after 9:30 Thursday night.

Jeff Benham lives a few doors down, and was able to get his wife and daughter out safely, but he ran back to get the cat.

That’s when he noticed a neighbour outside the door of the burning apartment.

“I heard my neighbour yell out to the unit that was on fire to open the door, he was going to kick it down, and then I came out and I saw him at the door about to kick it down,” Benham said.

“I looked up and I saw smoke coming out of the door and before I could tell him to stop, he had busted that door, and then we were engulfed in smoke.”

Because of the hallway filling with thick, black smoke, he had to crawl. He found the exit just in time.
