A water rescue unfolded Friday morning after a vehicle left Interstate 293 and plunged into the Merrimack River, according to a news release from the Manchester Fire Department.

The Manchester Fire Department was dispatched following a 911 call from a passing driver who witnessed a car "cross the shoulder and into the river" near Exit 4, the news release said.

"Companies initially had difficulty locating the vehicle," they said. "The IC (incident commander) walked north on the river bank and located the vehicle approximately 150 yards north of the reported location," the news release said.

Responders deployed two boats from the nearby boat launch near Delta Dental Stadium to assist from the water while firefighters descended the riverbank to access the scene.
